Taiping Hou Kui is one of the top ten most famous teas produced in China. It is produced on Huangshan Mounta in Taiping County, Anhui province. The tea has been produced since the early 1900s. Most green teas are picked before Qingming (April 3th); however, Taiping Hou Kui is harvested after Guyu (April 20). Taiping Hou Kui is grown in the villages of Xin Ming, Longmen, and Sankou. The best grade for this tea contains only two tender leaves and a single bud. The third and the fourth leaves are used for lower grade. Origin: Anhui province Shape: The leave is big, flat and straight. Total length of the two leaves and a single bud measures to around 5-7 cm. Color: The leave has a dark green color and changes to a bright green color after brewing. Taste: Mellow, sweet aftertaste with no bitterness and astringency. Harvest Period: Spring, after April 20. History/Story The legendary "Taiping Hou Kui " was originally a wild tea that was produced a hundred miles away from northeast Huangshan Mountain. Some birds transported and sown the seeds on the cliffs of the Huangshan Mountain. Since it was too hard for humans to harvest the leaves on the cliffs, monkeys were trained by people to pick the leaves. Hence, this tea is named “猴魁” Hou Kui, which means monkey and the “best” of tea. Honors: In 1910, won the Excellence Award at the Nanyang Commodity Exposition. 1915, won the first-class gold medal at Panama Pacific International Exposition. In 1955, Monkey Chief Peace was named one of the top ten Chinese tea. In 1972, Premier Zhou Enlai gave a bag of Taiping Hou Kui as a gift to President Nixon for his first visit to China In 2004, won the title "King of Green Tea" at the International Tea Expo. In 2007, President Hu Jintao gave Russian President Vladimir Putin Taiping Hou Kui green tea as ceremony gift.
